1. Color Matters
One needs to understand the size and shape of the space. Is the room large enough to use intense colors, or is it small and therefore needs colors of a lower intensity to open up the seemingly claustrophobic space? Colors vary according to lighting conditions and artificial light is known to modify color, depending on the type and color of the light source. White reflects light, bouncing it back into the room and making the space feel brighter. In this kitchen, a reflective white ceiling, white walls, and white countertops maximize the light provided by the pendant lamps and a pair of recessed cans. The light from a recessed fixture falls in a cone shape, so cones should overlap for even, safe illumination.
2. Layered Lighting Effect you should avoid using a single, extremely-bright fixture to light the entire kitchen. A well-designed kitchen should have layers of lighting elements, blending different types of light. Using different lighting sources, with varying illumination capabilities, and separate controls, is highly recommended. If you are redesigning your kitchen, try to incorporate:
- Task Lighting Fixtures — they are the principal source of illumination in the kitchen. Task lighting is installed along the countertops, slabs and spaces meant for preparing meals. Task lighting fixtures are installed slightly lower than conventional kitchen lights, along the upper edge of kitchen cabinets. The options available for task lighting include fluorescent tubes, spot lights and directional lights.
- Ambient Lighting Fixtures — these are used for making the kitchen space appear cozier. They are popular for creating a typical warm glow that helps to soften the shadows. If your kitchen has cabinets that fall short of the ceiling by about 3 feet, this space is perfect for installing ambient lighting fixtures.
- Indirect Lighting Sources — for creating a more dramatic look, you can blend indirect light with direct lighting fixtures. Indirect lighting is often used for adding elegance to the kitchen space. It is created by hiding the source of light from the main view. For this, lighting fixtures can be installed under the wall cabinets or in a layered format, along the ceiling areas.
3. Adding Overhead Kitchen Lights — this is a simple way of pumping-up the decorative appeal of the kitchen. Overhead lights are commonly installed over busy working zones in the kitchen. Overhead lights can be suspended from a low-voltage ceiling fixture or a track-mounted transformer. The most common overhead kitchen lighting fixtures are the task lights used over kitchen countertops. You can use the roof of the kitchen for hanging classic fixtures like small chandeliers or Victorian recessed lights. If a particular kitchen spot continues to remain shaded, you can hang lighting fixtures over it, using a designer chain or a pendant.
4. Cabinet Accent Lights. This is the easiest form of kitchen lighting to procure because it is readily available at most lighting stores. Use accent lighting to bring a wall of cabinetry to life. Linkable low-voltage puck lights can be installed along the top of the cabinets to bounce light off an arched ceiling, calling attention to the architecture. Inside glass-front cabinets, low-voltage strip lights and recessed mini cans emphasize collectibles. Accent lighting typically uses halogen, xenon, or LED bulbs because they are small enough to fit into diminutive fixtures yet produce bright light. Halogen is falling out of favor because of the high cost, relatively short life, and high heat output. Xenon bulbs are similar to halogen without the drawback.

Task lighting is as important as the general lighting and especially so in the kitchen. Kitchen task lighting tends to fall into two types: kitchen island lighting and under-cupboard lighting. Kitchen island lighting is usually provided by hanging pendant light fixtures or an arrangement of downlights above the island. The advantage of pendant lights is that they tend to be more decorative and throw a soft pool of light over the kitchen island area.
Under-cupboard lighting can consist of either tungsten, fluorescent or low-voltage lighting.
Track lighting is often used to light up kitchens but this needs to be fitted properly.
You need to consider the size and shape of your kitchen first. A small, galley kitchen is perfect for a central track but otherwise having track lighting in the middle of the kitchen so that it directs light onto the worktops is wrong - unless you have a show home.
As soon as you position yourself over a worktop to begin a culinary task, your body will create a shadow which is no good. The correct way to position track lighting in the kitchen is to have it a lot closer to the work surface, about 1 meter away from the cupboards.
