What does it mean if a camera has a wide-angle lens? Does that result in better pictures?
I have a regular compact camera, and am looking to buy a "step up" to this one. My budget would be about up to $250 tops.
I have been looking online, and the Kodak Z981 and also the Olympus SP610UZ is where I see the "wide-angle lens" description, while the others do not. And what's the difference between these cameras compared to a DSLR?
Any suggestions will be much appreciated. Thanks!
Your budget will only include P&S cameras.
A wide angle lens is one that you would use to photograph landscapes, cityscape's and seascapes as well as building interiors.
Since the sensor in P&S cameras are so small, telling you it has a 5.0-60 mm lens would mean nothing since we are all used to what size lenses on a 35 mm SLR does, so they give you 35 mm camera equivalent lens numbers, in this case, 28 – 336 mm. 28 mm is an okay wide angle lens although pros like lenses that are at least 20 mm or closer to 14 mm on a full frame or 35 mm SLR.
To get the similar wide angle view of a 14 mm on a full frame camera, you would need a 10 mm on a cropped sensor dSLR.
So you see, to understand what a wide angle lens is, you really need to know what the angle of view is, NOT the size of the lens in mm..
Super wide angle lenses ~ 114 degrees to about 95 degrees or 14 mm to 20 mm range
At this time, the widest wide angle lens length on P&S cameras are about 24 mm or 25 mm and only found on P&S cameras with optical zooms of 20x or better ($350 to $500)
